(NEXSTAR) – The Normandy American Cemetery is fulfilling its promise to mark the graves of Jewish soldiers with a Star of David.

Marble crosses mark the graves of more than 9,000 soldiers buried at the cemetery. In recent years, there’s been an effort to acknowledge the soldiers of Jewish heritage who hid their religion.

“And after the end of the war, the Jewish community asked for their servicemen to be buried under a Star of David,” Historian Anthony Foulquier said. “And 79 years later, we are still honoring this promise.”

Now, there are 152 Stars of David marking the graves of soldiers in the Normandy American Cemetery.
